Pentart Fineline Crackle Varnish Set gives your project surfaces the effect of beautiful old, crackled porcelain. This product consists of 2 components in each set which are numbered Component 1 and Component 2. Component 2 is solvent-based. Each set comes with an instructional leaflet.

How to apply Pentart Fineline Crackle Varnish:

  • Apply Component 1 onto your project surface with a soft brush. Allow to completely dry.
  • Apply Component 2 using a soft brush.  Allow to dry for several hours to a full day or overnight. The time it takes to crackle depends on environmental conditions such as humidity and temperature. Place your project near a warm stove or use a blow dryer or heat gun to help speed up the crackle effect. Don't hold a heat gun or hot dryer too close to your project. The heat can melt and burn your materials.
  • After Component 2 is completely dry and you have your crackle effect, apply antiquing mediums, pigment pastes or other mediums with a contrasting color to highlight your crackles. You can use metallic pigments, like gold, or any color, too!
  • NOTE: A glossy finish varnish is recommended due to the glossy-like shine that Component 2 of the Fineline Crackle renders. If a matte varnish is used, the matte varnish will dull the finish and may not render a desired appearance.

I LOVE this 2 Part Fine Line Crackle Varnish. It gives my projects the look of old porcelain with very fine cracks running through it. You do have to use the right products, of course, with the Varnish, and I did some experimenting with different products to see what would work. I applied the 2 Part Fine Line Crackle Varnish to 3 pieces of painted wood. Then I highlighted the cracks on the first piece using Pentart Antiquing Wax and that worked perfectly. You just rub the wax into the cracks and then remove the excess with some mineral turpentine. On the 2nd piece of wood I used some of my Dixie Belle Dirt, which is made for highlighting elaborate mouldings on furniture, and that worked really well too. On the 3rd piece, because I had heard about it on YouTube, I used eye shadow powder on the cracks and that worked so well that it's now my favourite product for using on this Varnish. I haven't tried using eye shadow cream yet but I can say that any type of eye shadow powder is fine for this. Once you finish your project with this Fine Line Crackle Varnish you MUST seal it with a Solvent Based Varnish, not a water based varnish. I've seen so many comments on YouTube from people who say that this Varnish just doesn't work for them, but it does work really well, as long as you use the right products with it, such as: Pentart's antiquing wax/eye shadow powder or Dixie Belle Dirt in the cracks, and Solvent Based Varnish to seal the 2 Part Fine Line Crackle Varnish. If you use the regular 2 Part Crackle Varnish, then you don't need to seal it with anything, but with this one you do. I thoroughly recommend this Fine Line Crackle Varnish to anyone who loves the look of old porcelain. Thank you Pentart for such a brilliant product.
